The client uses engineered LVL lumber to build many of their products used in overseas shipments. Because of the consistency and manufacturing process of LVL, it is extremely hard and dense making it very difficult to sink nails into. The client was using generic, undersized tools and poor quality 3-1/4” x .120 fasteners to build their crates and pallets. As a result, after initial assembly, builders would have to re-work each unit by manually hammering in each nail in an effort to properly countersink every fastener. In addition, the poor quality fasteners were not strong enough or large enough to be properly countersunk. Labor costs were rising.
