These tips should be followed all year long, but they are particularly helpful during the winter months. Below are 5 more tips that you can follow to help maintain the life of your pneumatic or cordless fastening tool.
6. Make sure that you are using the correct fasteners and loading them properly: Just because a fastener is marketed as a “coil” nail or a “stick” nail, doesn’t mean that it will fit your pneumatic or cordless tools. All tools have a minimum and maximum fastener size. Additionally, they are rated for certain degrees of collation and fastener gauge. Please read your owner’s manual to understand the recommended fastener type. Although many fasteners are designed to fit in tools a particular way, there are several others that can be loaded incorrectly. Be sure to pay close attention to how fasteners should be loaded and if there is any question, please refer to your owner’s manual.
7. Keep your fasteners clean and dry to avoid jams and misfiring: Pneumatic and cordless tool fasteners are not designed to be wet or corroded when being used in tools. Be sure to store your fasteners in a location that will keep them free of moisture in order to experience trouble free fastening.
8. Do not make alterations or disengage any of your pneumatic or cordless tool’s safety features: Pneumatic and cordless tools have come a long way with safety over the years and tool manufacturers have made these strides while maintaining the same high level of performance. It is never a good idea to make changes to your tools in an effort to improve performance. All safety features and mechanisms should be left in place, and if they are damaged or break, they should be repaired before you continue to use the tool.
9. Disconnect the air hose from the tool when not in use: Even today’s more efficient air compressors are still costly to operate. Removing your pneumatic tool from the air-line will ensure that your air compressor is not running unnecessarily. You should also repair any air leaks coming from air lines, couplings, and fittings. Leaving your pneumatic tool on an air-line when not in use causes unnecessary wear on internal O-rings. To prolong the life of your pneumatic tool and reduce service requests, remove the tool from the line when not in use. Safety is the biggest reason to remove your pneumatic tool from the air line. A pneumatic tool can’t be fired when it is not connected to a compressed air line. By removing the tool from the air line after use the operator can be sure that another person won’t pick up the tool and accidentally fire.
10. Drain your air compressor daily to avoid getting moisture in your pneumatic tools: Moisture and water are elements that will quickly reduce the performance of your pneumatic tool and will eventually cause damage to internal parts. It is not unusual for compressed air systems to produce moisture. There are methods and devices used for preventing the build-up of moisture in your air system, but if you don’t have access to these means the simplest action to take is the draining of your air compressor and lines. Drain your air compressor and air lines every day to reduce the amount of moisture buildup.
